Title: Buckeyes 2017
Post by: Peacerose on April 20, 2017, 10:54:48 PM
Finally got the new chicks settled.  18 moved to the brooder and 2 more wet ones left in the hatching tray.

They seem enormous compared to the bantams.  I ended up with only one brassy back chick.  You can see he is making the most of his new situation.

Two more chicks hatched overnight!  So that makes a total of 22.  I'll leave the rest of the eggs in till tonight.  I'm so tickled and owe a big thank you to Bill.  Without the rescue last year this wouldn't be happening!   sunny

Damn Dawn! You're gonna be eyeball deep in chickens before long...   buckeyes are hard to find up here. I'd bet there ain't many down there either. Sell some! You get to keep hatch'n and get help with the feed bill too!

Yes!  I'm thinking I want about 25 total chicks for myself.  So that leaves at least 12 chicks for a new buckeye lover.   lol

Just pure cuteness right there!  love01 Mine are already scraggly teenagers.  Can almost tell the roos from the hens!

Here are some pictures of my buckeye breeders.  Sorry for the blur.  They don't think they should have to hold still for pictures.   lol

This is the rooster, Waylon Tallboy:

My glamour girl, Fuzzy, on the roost.  Fuzzy looks much like Mama Hen -- big with a wide back, wide head, and color is more even.

Also, this happened -- When I went to the buckeye pen, Fuzzy and Sassafras were on the roost.  I called them and they jumped down and walked to an egg on the ground.  I said, "Who laid this egg?"  Sass walked up and put her foot on the egg.   PROOF that buckeyes are extraordinarily intelligent.  Disbelievers can keep it to themselves.

Random chickens won't do this.  Fuzz and Sass have spent a lot of one-on-one time with me in the quail porch. They have tasted mealworms.
They know their names and probably understand a few words like "egg" and "food".

roflmao I have 2- 5 year olds like that Dawn.  They know their names and walk right up to me and coo.....well, except Sunny (cross beak)....she's always looking for food that she can eat! I stopped naming everyone when I started with the lavenders.  They all look so much alike, I knew all their names would be "chicken"  roflmao The roo gets his name, just because it's only one.

Well shoot Bill......I posted in your post and it let me.  I fixed it, but it still says I edited your post.  Didn't know it'd let you do that.  I hit modify instead of quote so I could answer. eek

I'm really happy with my 2017 pullets -- they are of consistent color and tail angle.  Also, we seem to have lost the excessive back feather cushion.  Woo HOOOO!!!!  These issues were my greatest breeding concerns when selecting the rooster, Waylon Tallboy.  His comb and color are perfect, but his tail is a bit too high imho.  So that worked, but for next year it will be important to choose a rooster with proper tail angle.

But first, the pullets.  I'll be looking especially for wide heads and bodies. Also being mindful of the brow ridge.  I'm prepared to bring my breeding flock down to a small number this year as there are some very important traits to lock down.

Ha Ha!  Listen to my big plans.  face  This is the first time I had enough hens to make any meaningful selections!   sunny  Here are some of the 2017 pullets in action:

They are looking good Dawn! I love it when they match like that! There always seems to be a "clinker" in my  flocks, .... You've done well Lady. My brother has the buckeyes on the other end of the farm now. I can still hear his rooster crow'n, but only see them when they're in driveway!

What does Bro think of the buckeyes?
