Here are two of my buckeyes -- a hen and the rooster Bucky -- staying in the quail porch.  A rumor is floating around that the pens will be moved to a new location this weekend where the birds will enjoy better shade and drainage.  I've got ideas of putting an electric wire around it to keep out "undesirables".

Since he has been staying inside, Bucky has taken to standing about 2 feet away and just staring at me.  He has figured out my feeding routine and walks ahead of me.  It's as if he thinks he's helping.   If I take a break, he starts staring me down.  "Get busy, woman!  Food bowls are empty!"

More staring:

As far as Bucky's looks as a Buckeye rooster, I love his color, his tail, his beak.  I don't love his comb -- it sticks up too high in the back imho.  But he's all I got right now.

The other hen is hiding.  I think she has a nest behind the old round incubators.  I heard her back there going rrrrraaarrrrrraaaarrrrrraaaaa.  But I can't get back there easily, so she can stay until she comes out.

They are supposed to be a color called bay.  It is a rich reddish brown color.  Also said to be the same as a buckeye nut.  Color is a big problem in buckeye breeding because so many breeders are putting out orangish birds until people have whole flocks of wrong colored birds.  Stoney Creek's buckeyes are bay and beautiful.

So far my hatch is right on time. The fifth chick just rolled out of it shell. 3 more are pipped. 4 show no signs yet. Hopefully they're just planning to make their great escape together....

Well this hatch is likely over and not so good... I have 9 in the brooder and one pipped... But it's been still long enough it's likley dead.... The other two have done nothing... I left them in with the cornish I just locked down but I don't have high hopes....

Well you called it Dawn. The one that was pipped hatched over night.... That make 10 out of 12... 83% hatch rate works plenty good enough for me! I don't figure to keep more than three or four pullets and a pair of cockerels anyway... The cornish suck as egg layers and I figure I'll keep these in case little brothers flock takes a big hit. A means to start over....

Awesome! Best I can tell you likely set them on Sunday. That would make them a day late....
