Tonight I came uncomfortably close to a rattlesnake.  I hopped out the backdoor of the quail porch to fill some water jugs at the hose.  When I got to the bottom of the steps I looked back and saw this:

I stepped right next to that thing wearing flip flops!  So it came to me to run away, but also to take his picture -- for further study.  It turns out it is a Western Diamondback.  The surest sign is the black and white bands on the tail (just before the rattle).  Also in the below picture you can see the typical rattlesnake head shape.  It is probably about 2 1/2 feet long.  I've been having mouse problems.  That may be what attracted the snake.  Besides the birds.

So after seeing the snake and texting his picture all over the internet, I went over to the little trailer to watch the GOP debate.  When I came back to the old farmhouse to get my bag, that same snake was sitting on the front step!  I was able to get the picture as he was slithering under the house.

My husband saw this snake a week ago on the front steps.  So we've been watching out for snakes.  It's a dangerous situation to have this thing hanging around.  I'm going to arm myself.

What a nerve-wracking day at the farm!  I could hardly put a foot down without looking all around.  suspicious  As I was getting ready to fill some water jugs out by the hose, I saw that snake with his head raised up and looking right in the back door!  I reached out and slammed the door in his face.  Then went out the front door and got the shot gun from the truck.  I peaked out the back door and saw the snake's tail.  I jumped out the door in the direction away from the snake, got in position and fired.  Couldn't find him, but then DH got there and saw him going under the house.  Later, when I went to go to the little trailer for a drink, I saw that snake crossing the dirt road.  I couldn't get the shotgun to pump.  So the snake made it to a weedy fence line.  At least he was headed away from the house.  Also, he was damaged, so I didn't completely miss.   cheers

The snake has not been back.  Thank goodness!  I'm going to hang on to the shotgun in hopes of getting that big skunk.   /-----
